Moonlight Basin to Host Special Olympics Big Sky Area Winter Games

Moonlight Basin Resort will host the Special Olympics Big Sky Area Winter Games on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012. This is Montana’s third Special Olympics Winter Games.

More than 45 athletes from the Big Sky area will compete in alpine skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing events.  All activities and events for the Special Olympics Big Sky Area Winter Games will be hosted in Moonlight Basin’s Madison Village Base Area, Wagon Train and Cup-a-Jo ski runs. Advanced and intermediate races will be held on Wagon Train, with novice races being held on Cup-a-Jo. A 50-meter snowshoe course will be set up on Madison Avenue at the Madison Village Base Area, which will provide for ideal spectator viewing of the snowshoe races.

“An event like this brings communities together and inspires others while supporting these athletes in their quest to compete in winter sports,” said Greg Pack, Moonlight Basin General Manager.  “Our employees are thrilled to be involved with Special Olympics and to have the opportunity to share our passion for outdoor winter activities with the athletes and their families.”

Additionally, after the races are finished, participating Special Olympics athletes will take part in a “Parade of Athletes” in which participants will ski and ride in a celebration procession down Cup-a-Jo.

“Our Special Olympics athletes are excited to be heading to Moonlight Basin again…they are working hard to get even faster times this year,” stated Penni Kolpin, Special Olympics Winter Games Coordinator. “By having a local competition at Moonlight, we are able to serve more than twice as many Special Olympics athletes in winter sports competition as we could previously.  We are so thankful to Moonlight for sponsoring this competition!”

The Big Sky area includes Gallatin, Park and Sweetgrass counties in Southwest Montana, as well as part of Madison County.  For more information about the Special Olympics Montana, visit: http://www.somt.org/
