One Breath At A Time: Delilah’s Weekly Yoga Poses & Affirmations #3

There are so many fun and active things to do here in Big Sky, Montana. In a single day you can go fly fishing in the morning, back packing with the kids in the afternoon, and squeeze in 9 holes of golf before dark. However, you do have to pay to play, and it’s your back that often pays the price. More often than not it is the low back, but with these activities the upper back may be crying foul. Yoga can help. Try Eagle Pose to alleviate tight upper back muscles.

  • From a comfortable seated position with back nice and straight, inhale, as you extend both arms out to the side at  shoulder height. Now exhale as you cross the right arm over the left at the elbow, placing the palm of the left hand in the palm of the right hand (palms facing). Now, extend the forearms forward as you gently lift the elbows.  The forearms remain parallel to your face and the biceps are parallel to the floor. Hold for at least five slow deep breaths. To release, allow the grip to open and the energy of your body to dictate the path your arms take for the next minute. Close your eyes and feel the release of tension throughout the shoulders and upper back.
  • Now, inhale as you extend arms out to the side again, sitting nice and straight. This time, on your exhale, cross left arm over right at the elbow. Place right hand in the palm of your left hand (palms facing). Use a strap or a towel, if you are having difficulty getting the hands together. Remember, forearms are parallel to your face and biceps are parallel to the floor. Hold for five slow deep breaths before gently releasing the grip. Upon release, allow the body’s own energy to dictate where the arms and hands go. Close your eyes, soaking in the sensations in your shoulders and upper back.

This simple yoga stretch takes only a few minutes, can be done at home or in the office, and can alleviate much of that upper back discomfort associated with long hours of work and play.

Namaste,
