Toy Soldier Productions “Act Natural” Movie Review

Toy Soldier Productions “Act Natural” Ski Movie Premiere

It’s that time of year again… ski movie season! Every September, right around the time we start to jones for snow, the calendar starts filling up with skiing and snowboarding videos from around the world. Movie premieres and the celebration of the ski culture is a time honored tradition here in south west Montana, and Bozeman is at its epicenter. Over a dozen of the industries top ski and snowboard production companies stop here on their tour each year. With big names like Teton Gravity Research, Matchstick Productions, and others delivering the goods and setting the bar, it can be a hard market to break into. Toy Soldier Productions has done just that. Within three years time this crew of local Montana State University film school grads have made their presence felt, capturing the hearts and minds of local skiers and riders, and bringing the best of the Montana state ski scene to audiences around the country. Last Friday, we got a chance to catch up with the Toy Soldier Productions crew and check out the Bozeman premiere of their new film “Act Natural.” As usual the stoke was high, the place was packed, and the TSP crew did not disappoint!

Each season the TSP crew keep stepping it up, and this latest release is no exception. The level of skiing and riding, and production quality all noticeably improved. Across the board this year’s roster put together some strong parts, but there were a few that truly stood out. Local skier, Bomb Snow team memeber, and MSU student Shay Lee‘s opening part set the tempo for the entire film. By far one of the most well rounded skiers within the crew, Lee’s creative eye for urban features, stomped landings, and solid ski technique in all conditions had the audience on it’s feet. Brock Paddock was left holding the bag, and had to follow up Lee’s segment, but as it turned out he was more than up to the challenge. With a solid segment and a great sense of humor, Paddock‘s style and attitude turned some heads this year. Other honorable mentions include Dash Kamp and Noah Wallace‘s total destruction of the Moonlight Basin spring park shoot. Those guys crushed it! Last, but certainly not least is Sandy Bovile. What can we say… This guy can ski! From the streets, to the park, to the pow: he went bigger, stomped cleaner, and with more style and finesse. Bovile gets our vote for MVP.
